There is only one thing on this Earth that separates humans from animals and other living beings; and it greatly disgusts me that none of those scientists or professors up at Yale, Harvard, and Stanford have discovered it yet. Humans worship Gods. That is it; that is the only thing that separates us from monkeys and other primates. Monkeys do not build temples and slaughter innocent people in the name of their god. Monkeys do not start wars to please their god. Monkeys do not ‘damn’ other monkeys to hell just because they don’t worship the same god the same way. It makes me as a human almost wish to be a monkey. What good is a religion when all it does is cause pain to those who do not follow?
I believe however that religion was not always that way; once upon a time a long, long time ago in a land not so far away God decided to ‘infuse’ humans with his spirit, his good will, and therefore giving us the ability and desire to worship him; as well as the downside in the form of the ability to search out knowledge. Our human ancestors went from soulless sacks of flesh and blood and became, slowly of course, the creatures we are today. We went from leaving our dead behind without a second thought, or eating them, to burying them and finding new and creative ways to transport their souls to the afterlife; as well as eating them because hey, some people just think that’s a way to stay close to their loved ones.
We also went from creatures killing for a decent reason in my opinion to killing because our God or Gods told us to. We went from hunting animals because we needed the food, to murdering lambs because our God or Gods needed the blood; or else he or she or they would kill us. We went from building homes to protect our families from the rain to building temples that were completely worthless to everyone except the dead. However we also went from heartless creatures that killed for food, to creatures who respected the animals we slaughtered for our God or Gods. We turned to art and created master pieces to please our God. We created the most beautiful buildings in the entire world EVER for our God. But we also killed…we slaughtered…we murdered…we destroyed…in the name of our God.
Religion is just as important and beautiful to us as it is pointless and harmful. God is real. There is a greater force out there that controls every breeze in the air and every birth of a creature. There is a god out there who can kill as well as give life. It is the people who discovered that humans would do anything to please their god that took control of it. God never once came down to us and said ‘kill that innocent person and shed their blood for my satisfaction’ however many people have stood up and said ‘God told me to slaughter you.’ Religion is far more powerful than politics ever will be, because religion rules the politicians.
This is my book, my rant, about religion. I will talk about everything from the very first human sacrifices to the issue of gay marriage and abortions today. This is not a book of fact; this is not a historic text book, nor something I wish of you to use as your only form of research. This is a book dedicated to better educating you to think for yourself, to decide for yourself, to live for yourself, and to be for yourself. I do not want you to take this book to your governor and tell them to change their ways because I said so, I want you to take this book to your heart and let your heart decide what to do for itself. This is not a book of higher learning; this is a book for higher thinking. So get out there and think.
Part One
and in the beginning
A chapter about evolution and Darwin
In 1809 in my opinion one of the greatest thinking minds that this world has ever seen was born. He was born to a Christian family, and when he neglected his medical studies in college his father sent him to a Christian college to become a parson; a religion head of a parish church, a church not run by the larger Christian sects (like Catholics, Baptists, whatever)
Against popular belief Darwin was a Christian. He did believe in a greater force, called God, and did believe that God controlled a bit on earth. What he believed was that God sparked a change in the Earth which caused evolution to happen. God was the enzyme that caused the chemical reaction to occur, and evolution was a result of that reaction. He also believed however that God could not be proven nor disproven; after all how can you prove something who can very easily chose not to be proven, wouldn’t that ruin the entire ‘faith’ part of religion? I know for a fact that Advil was created to get rid of my headache, but I really don’t trust it any further than that.
Darwin thought up something that was completely against what his church, as well as the Catholic church, were teaching; but that is jumping ahead a little bit so let me back up some and explain to you the situation, set the scene in a way.
A long time ago in Old England the Church had absolute power. The King and Queen swore themselves to their religion, and that church had complete power of them and their kingdom. The people didn’t think twice about this because none of them could read and the bible or whatever other holy word they were taught was taught to them by their church, who could therefore infer God’s words however they saw fit. This is the first time we get a perfect example of how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
The church leaders loved this power. If Pope Bob didn’t like so and so because their daughter wouldn’t conform, he could very easily tell the people a scripture and translate how he wanted. He could take ‘and God told the people to respect their mother and father’ into ‘God told all you people out there to respect me, since I am your father’ (that is what the Catholics call their religious leaders, fathers). So if Father Pope Bob (now the people know him as father) wanted So and So’s daughter to conform and she wouldn’t, he could kill the entire family if he so pleased. He would simply tell the King what was happening, and she would be lynched or beheaded for treason.
This absolute power became extremely desirable in politics. If the Pope wanted to raise the taxes of the people, he would simply tell the people whoever didn’t pay that much would be damned the hell. The people would panic and do whatever they could to meet the money rate. The church even ended up with this idea to force people to pay for their salvation. The people couldn’t read, and were forced to pay the church or risk being damned for all eternity. But of course God himself wasn’t behind any of this, and I’ll bet you anything every single one of those ‘holy men’ are now burning in hell.
So the scene is set, the church has absolute power; but to keep that power they cannot let the people question ANYTHING. The people cannot question marriage, they cannot question taxes, they cannot question the bible, and they must absolutely NOT question how things happened. The church at this time taught that god simply said ‘LET THERE BE LIFE!’ and poof, everything as it is today just popped into existence! People were walking around on twos, dogs were chasing cats, cows were being milked, and everything was in its proper order.
Darwin, the little rebel that he was, discovered during his many trips out to different islands that this just didn’t make sense in the big picture. Here on one island was a bird EXACTLY like the bird on that other island, but this bird hard a bigger harder beak perfect for breaking these eggs for food and the other bird had a perfectly thin needle like beak perfect for sucking nectar but besides that these were the same birds. He began to think for himself. He began to question everything the church had taught him and said no, these birds are this way because those birds would not survive in this environment. These birds evolved from a common ancestor. The weaker birds died because they did not have the adaption of those birds who survive there today.
He was shunned by the church and labeled a sinful, anti-Christ, anti-Christian traitor. The church would not have been able to hold on to their power if the people started questioning their teachings. They could not stand by and wait while the people ran through the situation in their heads. ‘Wait, Darwin has discovered this, and he is a well educated Christian man…but it goes against the Church, if the church lied about this then what else have they lied to us about.’ People would rebel, and the church would lose their power.
However even when the church lost its absolute power they forgot about one simple think, Darwin’s destroyed reputation within the religious community and today people still refuse to believe in evolution just because the church once upon a time said it was against God, an opinion they stated simply to keep absolute power within the church. Religion is the greatest force in politics, because religion is the weapon of the politicians; but only when the people cannot think for themselves.
I believe however that religion was not always that way; once upon a time a long, long time ago in a land not so far away God decided to ‘infuse’ humans with his spirit, his good will, and therefore giving us the ability and desire to worship him; as well as the downside in the form of the ability to search out knowledge.
