Welcome to Nightmare
He watched her as she moved slowly across the stage, her black gown flowing loosely against her body with every step. Upon her face was the perfect irrepressible grin, her eyes ablaze in glee. Her mid-back length dark brown hair was tied back, the square graduation hat tilted ever so slightly on the top of her head; most likely a result from her constant nodding at the four people who wouldn’t stay still in the crowd. His eyes followed her every move, trying his best to ignore the waving Kuro and Eric who was on the verge of jumping up and down. On the other side of Eric was the new girl, Kaori; while she had only shown up bare weeks ago she had become inseparable from Flick already.
She was a beautiful young woman by any standards; five foot four, slim, with tanned skin and shoulder length silky midnight black hair, and the darkest brown eyes any of them had ever seen before. Her smile was bright and happy, her eyes the softest kindest things Eric had ever seen next to Flick’s; yet there was something about her that put the entire group on edge, excluding Flick of course; she would fall in love with a deadly rabid lion if no one was there to stop her, and even then she’d still fight against them. So far, however, Kaori had done nothing that caused danger to any of them, so they were all fine for now.
Cross watched her from the corner of his eyes for a moment, till she waved at Flick as she walked to the dean standing in the middle of the stage to take her certificate and shake hands. His eyes locked back on her this moment, and stayed on her until she left the stage and went back to her seat. More names were called, a speech was given, and then the hats were thrown; Flick nearly falling as she ran back to her family. Yes, they were her family now; no other way to put it.
With her arms locked around Eric, who was giggling with her, she took in her congratulations and they made their way home. Cross and Kuro couldn’t help exchanging glances with each other and glaring silently at Eric, who held Flick close; they were still attached to the hip, with Kaori and Flick clinging to each other as well, and neither of them liked it.
“I can’t believe I’ve finally gotten my degree.” Flick’s voice rang in pride as she stared at the paper in awe. She was the first, and possibly the only one in the group to finish college and now she had a degree in pre-law under her belt and would be starting law school next fall. No dared speak of it, but everyone knew what was coming next.
She lay on the couch; her newly framed degree clung to her chest. Eric sat at her feet, next to Kaori who sat in the loveseat by herself. Cross sat at the breakfast bar, his chair turned around so he could face into the living room with them, and Kuro was cooking silently in the kitchen.
“You’ll be in New York.” His voice was dark, the accent still lacing his every word; an accent only Flick could truly pick up anymore. He sighed deeply, stretching slightly before looking directly towards Flick, who was doing her best to avoid his dark eyes.
She felt the others staring at her, and now Kuro had entered the room and was leaning against the wall watching her as well. They had to talk this through now so that they were ready when the time came in three months for her to move. Currently their three bed room apartment in Texas was becoming too crowded anyway, with Eric and Kuro sharing a room, Cross in his own room, and Flick and Kaori sharing a room. Flick had a two bed room apartment picked out in New York just five miles from her school, and now they had to figure out who was going where with who. A conversation they had all been avoiding like the plague, especially with this new Kaori girl in their lives… something that none of them were able to wrap their minds around even now…
She had simply appeared one day, born from nothing and yet everything. She had clung to Flick the moment they first met, claiming she had been raised next door to her when they were simply children; she had known Flick’s older brother, and that was all Flick needed to know. When asked of her history, she simply told them her parents had just died and she was 26; four years older than Flick, three years older than Eric, the same age as Kuro, and two years younger than Cross. Then she simply smiled happily at them, ignoring completely the fact she had simply shown up naked in the living room that morning, apparently Flick didn’t notice either.
She smiled at Flick, the mirror she had been told, then Cross, the hunter she had been told, then at Eric, Flick’s human pet, then finally at Kuro, whom she lingered on, the target. Kuro stared back at her a moment, trying desperately to reach her thoughts, to touch her mental bubble…but there was nothing. She simply smiled at him, and was led off by Flick.
“He will be yours soon enough,” she could recall his voice only in her dreams, that warm velvet voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. She could never put a face to it, and yet at the same time knew she could pick him out of a crowd in a heartbeat, if not faster. She would cling to that voice which told her what to remember, what to believe, what to think; and then she would wake and be utterly and completely alone, with only one thing she knew for sure; she was to win.
They sat silently in the living room, the shadows in the room growing longer and longer until soon the shadows devoured all. The only noticeable sound was the soft breathing and rhythmic heart beats, sound and hypnotic in the silent darkness. Finally, one of them spoke up; his voice deep and perfect, sending chills through Flick unlike ever before, possibly because of her strange connection with this creature which had been severed thanks to her childhood friend.
“I’m leaving.”
They were two simply words that made Flick’s heart stop, although she had heard them many times before; they were his favorite words lately, slipping from his soft lips like acid, and yet it burned into her flesh far deeper now, since the end was only two weeks away.
Their future had been decided over a single Chinese meal, Cross was going off on his own to try and find himself again; after all ever since he had arrived here all he knew was Flick and their group. Kuro was returning to his world, there was nothing more he could do here; and he had stopped aging and couldn’t stay any longer anyhow, his world needed him.

As of June 2009 this is the final chapter of The Chronicles of Blood; I am very disappointed that I never got to Akira, but as you will soon learn he is a solid character in all of my writings. Akira, Kaori, Kinzoku, Raiden, Felicia (Flick), Kuro, Pegasus, and Chey are the only solid characters in all of my writings; their personalities and names and appearances look exactly the same while their background and abilities vary based on story.
Well I hope you enjoyed.
